One Day in Girard: Girard’s Hidden Gem—Inside the Boutique Where Everything Tells a Story

By Kaylee Dillow

Located in the historic square of Girard, Kansas, Painted Barrels is a vendor boutique that first opened in 2019 by two retired teachers. In August 2023, ownership passed to teacher and coworker Sabrina Murphey.

This small business partners with other entrepreneurs to offer a wide variety of goods. Currently, Painted Barrels collaborates with 55 vendors, with an additional 20 on the waiting list. Vendors sell a variety of homemade, vintage and gently used items. Examples include jewelry, clothing, furniture, soaps, tumblers, plants, 3-D printables, food and much more.

One of the vendors is Sabrina’s husband, Jeff. His booth is located at the front of the store and showcases a variety of homemade products. Jeff owns and operates his own ranch and farm, where he grows wheat that he processes himself, producing flour sold in the store. Using this flour, he also creates and packages homemade muffin mixes. Additionally, Jeff raises cattle and hogs, offering fresh, locally sourced pork and beef for sale at Painted Barrels. Furthermore, Jeff is also quite the handyman, crafting wooden products that are available in his booth.

Painted Barrels continues to thrive as a community-driven shop, offering a unique variety of local craftsmanship, creativity, and connections. Whether you’re looking for handcrafted goods, farm-fresh food, or one of a kind vintage products, Painted Barrels remains a spirited destination in the heart of Girard.
